As the nonbinary community grows in numbers and visibility, it also faces new challenges — among the biggest, respect and accurate representation through language. That’s particularly true in one of the most gender-based languages in the world: Spanish.
Late last year, the It Gets Better Project announced funding of a new EduGuide for the inclusion of nonbinary people in Spanish. Last month, we proudly unveiled the finished product at Pride Connection Mexico’s Summit in Mexico City.
Neutral and inclusive language in Spanish can be a challenging thing to get used to, but it isn’t that difficult when you get to practice it.
To create the EduGuide, we partnered with Eqty Insider (the parent company of hom*osensual.com, the most visited online LGBTQ+ news outlet in the Spanish world), Pride Connection México, and, of course, our affiliate, It Gets Better México.
Aimed at better educating Spanish-speaking media on better understanding and writing about nonbinary gender identities, we looked to create an educational tool that would also appeal to general audiences eager to learn and expand their allyship. We also worked with some of the most vocal voices in Mexico’s non-binary community to talk about the issues that matter to them most and that they wish other people understood better.
Proper use of neutral and inclusive language in Spanish can be a challenging thing to get used to, but it becomes easier with practice and education. We hope that this EduGuide helps move to education and understanding of non-binary communities forward.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: This guide is being released as we’re seeing a rise in violent attacks on Mexico’s nonbinary community. We recognize the importance of using tools like this to raise awareness and educate people to eradicate stigma and hate. As we mentioned in our presentation in Mexico City, we dedicate this EduGuide to the memory of magistrate Ociel Baena, whose example and legacy should inspire us all to continue to work to make things better.

A medida que la comunidad no binarie crece en número y visibilidad, también enfrenta nuevos desafíos, entre los cuales el mayor es el respeto y la representación precisa a través del lenguaje. Esto es particularmente cierto en uno de los idiomas más sexistas del mundo: el Español.
A fines del año pasado, It Gets Better Project anunció la financiación de una nueva EduGuía para la inclusión de personas no binaries en Español: Guía de lenguaje para la inclusión de las personas no binaries. El mes pasado, presentamos con orgullo el producto terminado en la Octava Cumbre de Pride Connection México en la Ciudad de México.
Puede ser difícil acostumbrarse al lenguaje neutral e inclusivo en español, pero no es tan difícil cuando lo practicas.
Para crear esta EduGuía, nos asociamos con Eqty Insider (la empresa matriz de hom*osensual.com, el medio de noticias LGBTQ+ en línea más visitado en el mundo Español), Pride Connection México y, por supuesto, nuestra filial, It Gets Better México.
Con el objetivo de educar mejor a los medios de habla hispana sobre cómo comprender y escribir mejor sobre las identidades de género no binaries, buscamos crear una herramienta educativa que también atrajera a audiencias generales ansiosas por aprender y expandir su alianza. También trabajamos con algunas de las voces más vocales de la comunidad no binarie de México para hablar sobre los temas que más les importan y que desearían que otras personas entendieran mejor.
Puede ser difícil acostumbrarse al uso adecuado del lenguaje neutral e inclusivo en Español, pero se vuelve más fácil con la práctica y la educación. Esperamos que esta EduGuía ayude a avanzar hacia la educación y la comprensión de las comunidades no binaries.
